Per usual for me, December was a mad rush to finish sewing Christmas gifts: namely flannel robes for my brothers, lounge pants for Marc, and a Pendleton wool purse for my cousin. Anyone who sews knows how painstaking it can be to make a gift for someone for fear that it won’t turn out perfect.
When it comes to sewing for myself, I’ve learned to let go. To not care if that topstitching isn’t 100% parallel or if the invisible zipper is slightly… visible. It takes a lot for a perfectionist to surrender to flaws! But that chill attitude flies out the window when it comes to gifts. That’s why I was so glad I had time to squeeze in a quick palate cleanser for myself before our holiday trip.
Grainline Studio released the Driftless Cardigan in March of 2016—slouchy grandpa sweater with pockets, drafted by my favorite indie patternmaker? It was only a matter of time before I made one.
The Details
- Pattern: Grainline Studio Driftless Cardigan, view A
- Fabric: blush pink rib knit
- Size: 8
- Alterations: added 1.5″ to the body and the sleeves
I used the wrong side of the rib knit for the cuffs and neckband for contrast. For construction, I used my serger wherever possible. There are two slightly fiddly steps in an otherwise quick sew: slipstitching the neckband in place and anchoring the pockets down with thread chains.

I’ve learned to love zoning out and working with my hands, a needle, and thread, so these steps were a welcome change of pace at the end of construction.
I debated sewing some buttons on to keep the cardigan closed, but I haven’t been compelled enough yet to go through with it. I’ve worn this about 10 times already, and it’s incredibly comfortable and surprisingly warm. The fabric pills a bit, but not enough to look sloppy. I’ll have to see how it wears after a few months.
And’s that’s all I have to say about this one! If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out this pattern.
Definitely looks like a comfortable make… The Pendleton Wool purse is so cute! Hope she loved it!
